Anyone had a problem with exhaust? fumes under the bonnet and getting into cabin. Worse when idling & stationary especially from cold start.

 

You have an exhaust leak my friend. Either at the manifold or where the exhaust manifold meets the down pipe. Its worse when its cold because metal contracts when its cold, thereby opening up the crack or leak. When the engine warms up, the metal expands.

When your stationary, there is no moving air to drive the fumes out under the car. I hope that you are at least driving with a window or two open. It's cold over on this side of the pond so it's got to be cold over there as well. Get that looked at fast, its enough to make you and your passengers sick.

You should be able to look and get a good idea of where the leak is if its bad enough.

Look for black soot around any connectors and rust spots.

You may be able to hear the leak if its in the manifold.

 

x2 on exhaust leaks at or near engine, another thing I would look at is the crankcase breather hose/tube from valve cover to air filter housing and the PCV valve and tubes. I have seen people complain about exh smell and found the tube broken or dis-connected. It doesnt smell like exhaust to me but for some people it might.

 

yeah exhaust leak seem right. Get it on some jack stands or a lift and take a look. I had a leak issue with my down pipe. the crack got bigger and the pipe disconected with the flange. so see if you can fix it fast. Dont take it anywhere cause they will charge you big buck. Its a simple wield fix to seal the leak

 

It could also be rust in the tailgate letting exhaust into the cabin. Mine had no tailpipe and no inside panel on the tailgate.

 

Garage reckon its a broken 'C' clip holding the pipe join between the manifold & turbo (Or that's what I understood was said - not bolted flange arrangement). Need to get the part number for the 'C' clip. Anyone know location of a parts database on-line to newbies??

Your Jeep has a Turbo??? I know of the C clip holding the exhaust. When I was stationed in Germany I had a mean little VW Cabriolet that give me Ulcers over the C clips on the exhaust so I know about them quite well. However, I have never heard of a Turbo in a Jeep.
