Engine is ticking 2001 4.7L Grand Cherokee
My jeep ticks or clicks softly in nutral and heavy as i accelerate. My mechanic suggested I put in a rebuild engine in. He said it could be a broken piston rod or a lifter. If its a lifer is easier to fix but in the piston rod senario the reality is that I would have to get a engine replacement. Does this make sence or should I be looking for an altunative route to my problem ? Also what harm am I doing to the jeep by driving it in its current state?

how many miles on the engine, most common cause for the "ticking", which is more noticeable near the front of the engine, would be the guides for the timing chain....which start to show their wear around 80-90,000 miles

The early 4.7 engines had lifter issues. Maybe run some MMO through it with the recommended 0w20 oil and see if it helps. Other wise drive it until it blows.

Marvel Mystery Oil. A quart of ATF in the crankcase for a couple hundred of miles would help clean the sludge and varnish out too.
