Default Engine control module

Hey everyone, I just this 98 GC 4x4 Laredo and has an electrical problem. Took it to my electrical mechanic and said I need reman. engine control module. I can't afford one of those right now and got a used one from a junk yard, from a 98 GC 4x4. Not sure but he said I need to take it to auto zone and check to see which model or serial number(s) would be compatable w/ the year of mine. I didn't have VIN on hand but could somebody point me in the right direction? My dad bought used one for now just so I can get running and to get checkd out for any other electrical problems.. Thanks!

if they share the same motor and transmission you should be fine... and if it fixes it then dont go buy a new one... just keep this one from the JY...

Default computer update..

I appreciate the feedback fellas'..I went and got a list from the dealer by giving them the Vin# and they gave me a list of 6numbers for module. My mechanic didn't say much but, he could perform any tests from the plug-in device and said it was the computer. He's pretty good electrical guy but, I'm not gonna go buy a new module if it comes out w/ more problems. My GC has a pwrcontrol module w/ california emissions and the one that came off it was 56041840AA and these are the ones that could fit it: 5604451AA, 5604451AD, 5604158AA, and R60141150AA. I'm trying different junk yards unless anybody knows where I can get one? It's a 98' GC 4x4 Laredo, 4.0L, all electric..Thanks again.

All you can do is throw it in & see if it works. You can't do it any harm trying.

If it isn't the right one, it won't run.

You can get a rebuilt one made just for your vehicle. I got one from autocomputerexchange.com about two years ago, I think it cost me about $275. You send them your core back after you get the one you bought in & running. That was less than half of what a new one from the dealer would have been. Highly recommended; you just give them your VIN when ordering, and they have it to you in three or four days. No issues with mine yet at all. (Knocking on wood!)

No harm in trying yours, though.. it's only about a 20 minute swap. I did have to take out the coolant resivoir to make it happen.. that was the hardest part. And be CAREFUL when taking off the mass connectors.. those little tabs break easily. They don't require any force.. just the right order in undoing them. Clean them with a good electrical contact cleaner while you have it apart as well.

Good luck!
