electronic throttle indicator/limp mode

electronic throttle indicator/limp mode
Help please!,
the symbol for the electronic throttle (red flashing lightning bolt) has started flashing on the display of my 2006 grand cheerokee laredo (3L V6). I have reduced power and limited RPM's. Then the yellow engine management light came on.
Can anybody throw some light on this? What causes the problem or is it a common design flaw with the jeep?
