electronic clonking noise when breaking?
Hi everybody!
Recently bought a 1998 Grand Cerokee Orvis 4.0. Firstly, I'm from blighty, so specs may be different from US. Anyway.... I've driven Land Rovers, Range Rovers and more recently, a Dodge Durango whilst driving around California, Arizona & Nevada, so I'm used to 4x4's. But, this Cherokee has an odd fault? When breaking at slow speeds, and then sometimes afterwards, accelerating away, there's an electronic whirring/clonking sound from behind the dash, and when breaking, slight vibrations through the break peddle? I've searched on other forums, but can't find any answers? Is it going to be fatal? or is it just a quirk of older cherokees? And, what the hell could it be????
Any info/relevant links would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Gavin

Cheers for the quick response! No, the warning light doesn't come on.. all the warning lamps illuminate on the shelf check when turning the ignition on; and then go out, except the parking brake as I always put that on. I wondered if it was something like the ABS though? The breaks work fine.. but I've yet to have to break suddenly. Shall I try it on a quiet piece of road and see what happens!!! Or is it a better idea to just take it to a garage and get a quote, so that way I'll have enough time to sell one of my kidneys to pay for it

i had a truck that did something like this. the ABS mechanism kicked in and would not shut off. i just pulled the fuse under the hood for the ABS. your brakes will operate as usual but the ABS will not activate if you brake hard. your tires might skid.

So now all I'll do is remove the fuse until its next MOT, or if we get another really bad winter here!
Cheers
