Default driveshaft

Hi guys! Newbie Jeep owner here. I've got a 99 Cherokee Laredo on 33's with a 5.5" lift. I just spit out my front driveshaft, blew a ujoint. I'm wondering if there is a manual hub option for this thing to save wear and tear on my front shaft and help increase my gas mileage by being able to disengage that front shaft?

This made by Warn and it is expensive and I believe you loose your ABS.

Thanks for the link. That one seems to only be for XJ's. I'm running a ZJ, wonder if that makes a difference?

actually if you have a 99 then you are running a WJ and it makes a big difference as to what model. As said you will loose your ABS, problem if you have to get inspected, you will have different bolt patterns on the front hubs versus the rear as the warn kit is 5x5.5 most likely and your wheels are 5x5 pattern. What transfer case do you have? If you have a quadratrac transfer case you would make it think the rear wheels are spinning and the front wheels are not moving with a hub kit which would cause the TC to try and supply power tothe front wheels and probably burn up the TC. So if you are really going to do this you would have to swap in a selectrac (242) or command trac TC.

Also if you have a 99 then you have CV front axles not ujoints and that is very expensive to convert from CV to ujoint. The warn kit just has the outer shafts as the vehicles they list all have ujoint front axles and all you have to do is swap the outer shaft at teh ujoint.

do you have

4hi, N, and 4lo ---> quadratrac can not do a hub kit
2wd, 4pt, 4ft, N, 4lo ---> selectrac could add hub kit

whew..ok I'm running selec trac, so at least I'm not going to ruin my t-case driving with my front driveshaft off.....thats a relief.

I just don't want to have to replace ujoints ALL the time since my front driveshaft is constantly spinning. The man hub kits seems like too much effort for this issue. I guess the best bet is to get it greased as often as possible.

Well if you are blowing ujoints then you have issues with the pinion angles and need to fix that. You probably need to get adjustable control arms and take a little angle off the shaft. May need to get a custom shaft made. 5.5 inches is a lot for a WJ. They start getting quirky above 4in and require major work to go above that limit. What lift you running? TC drop, long arm or short arm? Hopefully not factory arms.

I think it is factory arms...as i said I'm new to jeeps. JKS dicso's, but I think the stock arms are being used, just stretched to the max...custom driveshaft has already been done, to accomodate for the angle, its not as severe as you might think and I've run much larger angles on DD's with even shorter shafts, so I'm not too concerned. Whats the issue with stock arms??

Hey great thread hijack. Welcome to CherokeeForum. Not too sure what you are getting at there? Are you suggesting I swap in a u-joint from an xj into my busted cardan? or possibly suggesting I put an entire new axle in the front of my jeep? or.....are you talking about your own issue?
In any event, you'll need to clarify.

First thing is if you have a 99 Xj WITH A 5.5" lift kit. You either have after market Control Arms or Control Arm Drop Brackets. Either set up should have your wheel cambor good unless somebody added a BB to the height of the original kit.
Second thing is, you can get the Warn manual hub kit for an XJ D30 5 x 4.5 wheel lug pattern, but, as the guys said you will pay for it to the tune of about $1500 - $1800 depending on who you buy it from. I can't spend that much on my D30 axle as I plan to upgrade to a D44 someday soon. Heck I paid just $2600 for my whole Jeep.

i can't believe you have a 99 wj with a 5.5 lift and stock ca's..depending on your tire size this would be nearly impossible

is it a grand cherokee or a cherokee?

XJ, ZJ or WJ I'd say he has after market Control Arms or Control Arm drop brackets.
