differential or cv?
went 4wheeling the other day i got stuck and i notice that my two front wheels are not moving just the rear. I manage to drive it home but its kind of stiff, grinding, knocking noise when turning and some low pitch noise while driving it. i call up the dealer and they say its the differential and i need to bring it in for them to test it out. if it is a cv problem I can do myself. Any idea what this can be?

This is a ZJ not a XJ. Being the 5.2 it has CVs in the axle and the front driveshaft. Also there is no vacuum disconnect on the ZJs either. The XJ was plagued with that! Also, the ZJs have a lp D30. My guess is your NP249 crapped out the VC. Common problem on the 93-95s. U can swap out for a NP231 or a NP242 or you can replace the VC.

The front axle is a two piece unit. There is a small box on the back of the passanger side of the front axle, it uses vacuum to engage the front axles. If you lose vacuum to this, you lose 4wd.
Because they don't have them?

I began to have the same issue you mention. I have a '93 i6 limited and it started doing the same thing, but by the time I got home it was grinding every time I put power to it. I suspect its the VC like mentioned before. I am just going to swap the t-case as I have one on the ready because this seems to be a common problem.
