If it's loose good chance the pinion bearings are shot. And yes it being loose and or bearings gone will give you a gear whine and ruin the ring and pinion.

If you tight too much then you will ruing the ring and pinion gears.
I had that problem and I replaced the diff bearings and pinion bearings.
It is rear of front?

I just did front. Change bearings only. It is not that complicated and I did not use any special tools. The only tool I had to buy was the bearing pulley($40) and socket for that big nut. Front do not have c clips. You will need to get new crush sleeve. I change diff bearings too and diff seals(axle seals). I use rope and "come alone" to pull diff out. It will go back easy on little angle.
The only "thing" you have to worry is tighting the pinion shaft nut. It need a strong arm or big impact. I took mine to local drive line shop and the tight it for $30.

you have to take the axle out. Then take the caps off the diff bearing. The diff will be be tight in case so you will have to use some big crow bar or puller to take it out. Then you have to keep the pinion shaft yoke secure. I use large c clamp. 1.1/8 socket for big nut. 36 mm socket for axle. After you take the nut out use rubber hammer to tap the shaft out. It will come trough diff.
I have dpf manual but do not know if I can attach here.
try http://www.jestarkel.net/dif.pdf if this link work then right click to save.
I have a lot of manuals but have no idea of how to post it.
I bought mine 2 month ago and this was my first time to work on diff.
