A while ago I got a flat. I put the spare on and drove for about 15 miles until the differential (Dana 35) started to smoke. I was told that my axle and pinion bearings were shot. SO I replaced them. But now when I feel the differential, the outside temperature is really hot!

My question is do you think the gears will need to be replaced or is this temperature normal for differentials to become when driving?

The reason why I am worried this because it will become super hot to the touch after about 10 miles.

I replaced the bearings. The pinion nut was tightened down enough so there was no play in the pinion gear. The gear had some resistance, but not enough to turn on its own. Im not sure thats how it was before(able to turn freely), but it seemed reasonable.

Another thing, I put synthetic oil back in instead of conventional. The reason being I thought it would be better for it.
