I had a grinding noise occur and traced it to the front differential of my 1998 5.2L Grand Cherokee.

The shop wants to charge a ridiculous amount to rebuild the differential and said it'd be better if I could just get a replacement.

Now, I'm not too sure where to go from here. Should I just grab a whole front end? I'm having trouble finding just the differential.

Also, I've found a few front ends with the same Dana 30 w/ 3.55 gearing but from a different make (I think it was some Wrangler). Would these work on my Grand Cherokee?

 

I replaced the whole front axle on my 97 GC I used a axle from a GC A wrangler one will work as will a Cherokee one,but the cherokee one doesn't have any adjustments on the lower control arms.

 

Ok great. I'm not worried about any axle mounting issues, all I need is the differential itself. It's just easier to find a full assembly

 

The front axle in the 84-99 XJ is a high pinion diff with reverse cut gears.
