Default D35 Differential gears fell out

I was replacing my axle bearings and I removed the clips and he axles came out but I accidentally spun the differential and the two smaller gears fell out.

How can I get these back in??

Help!

Thanks!

1. Make sure the thrust washers are on the axle gears and put them back first.
2. To put the other spiders back you also make sure their washers are on the gears and start by placing back in the lower position by using the axle gears to turn it in place.
3. Advance the cross shaft part way to hold there and while putting the upper spider back turn one of the axle gears to "spin" it in place.

Place the gears directly across from eachother while the axle shafts are out, then rotate them into place. make sure the shims are where they belong and in the future always keep the cross shaft in the carrier to keep this from happening again.

Thanks guys!

I got them back. I noticed if they are not correct, the pin wont go back in. I actually had to put them back in twice!

I put the gasket and cover back on and torqued to 30lbs.

Now, I just need to figure out if I have a Limited slip differential and fill it back up.

Thanks again!

Can anyone tell from these pictures if I have a Limited Slip Differential?

This is the info from my build sheet.

Sales Code Description
ERH 4.0L I6 Power Tech Engine
DGB All 4-Speed Automatic Transmissions
DGKS 4-Spd. Automatic 42RE Transmission
DMEP 3.73 Rear Axle Ratio
DRMP Dana 35C/194MM Rear Axle

I want to make sure I am using the right gear oil.

Thanks!

Thank a lot guys! What an awesome forum.

I am not afraid to work on my vehicle, but as a new Jeep Owner I was unfamiliar with replacing the bad bearing and leaking seal.

Thanks to this forum I did it... Now I need to change the pinion seal. I found some great info on doing that as well!

You are correct but your pic is of the ford 8.8 and the tone ring on the ring gear has nothing to do with an LSD. The tone ring was used for the speed sensor and/or ABS system. Also another easy was to tell if the 8.8 is an LSD is the "S" spring used between the side gears.

Dana 35 LSD had a square type carrier too and the clutches are hidden behind the carrier on the outer sides of the side gears.

Not to do it right no... U could and reuse everything else the same and it would probly be fine for a long tine.... However if were still talkin a dana35 then its not worth the money... Find ya a 97+ 8.25 from another XJ...

Based on your picture compared to mine, since my housing seems rounded, it is not lsd correct?

Also, what fluid would you recommend ? Should I go the synthetic route since I drained and cleaned everything out?

Thanks
