Default CV vs U joint ?? Dana 30

I've noticed some earlier ZJs dana 30's have cv joint axle shafts as opposed to a u joint curious which one is better I'm assuming the u joint would be but not sure. my other question is at what years did they switch to CVs & are the axle shafts interchangeable.

The ZJs with the AWD NP249 transfercase had the CV axle shafts for smoother operation while turning. It's not a year thing, it's a transfercase thing.

What Busted said is true. The thing with a single u-joint is the output shaft changes velocity every 1/4 revolution if the two ends aren't straight. The more angle, the more velocity change, so when turning, the more the angle, the more it tends to bind.

Constant Velocity joints act like a double u-joint, canceling out this velocity change and make for a more smooth power flow.

AFAIK, the shafts are interchangeable.
