CV axle mystery
Hello everyone! I'm hoping someone can help me solve this mystery. I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7L. It's the full-time 4-wheel drive deal. It says Quadra Drive on the console. I'm trying to replace a clunking CV axle. I couldn't go over 40mph or the steering wheel felt like it was going to shake out of my hands.
Anyway, I ordered a CV axle off Rockauto for a Jeep with my specifications. When it arrived I inspected it and discovered they are the same length overall, but the inward splines aren't the same length and the machined surface for the seal isn't in the same spot either. I went back into Rockauto's site and carefully looked at the pictures of an axle without vari-lok, but the shaft dimensions are about an inch longer than what I have. So, I loaded everything up and went down to the parts store and had them order me in one of each. We compared and it's the same deal. The machined surface and splines don't match on anything they can get either. The shaft I'm replacing is a GSP ncv82510. I'm wondering if the previous owner put the wrong one in at some point in the past. It didn't appear to be leaking though. I have no idea what to think. Do I put the one in that's supposed to be the "correct " one or do I go on eBay and order a GSP one with the same part number?
