I have an 05 grand cherokee and it has been leaking coolant from the area of the water pump. My view is obstructed so I can't see exactly where but IM assuming water pump. This morning my wife took the kids to school and when she got back, instead of leaking like it has normally been doing, it wasn't leaking but it was smoking. My temper gauge works and it didn't read that the motor was overheating. as I mentioned I assume it's the water pump leaking but what would cause it to not leak and smoke as if it had overheated?

Try posting in the GC section. This is for the XJ's. BTW, You should have looked at it when it first noticed the leak. Who knows what damage you caused by waiting.

When was last time you checked the level of the coolant?
If most of the coolant has leaked out your temp gauge could show a lower than actual temperature reading if the sensor isn't in contact with enough coolant. Also if the level of coolant is below where the leak is then steam/smoke could be escaping from where the coolant was leaking.
