The coil on my 93 Jeep Cherokee has died 3 times within the last month. It's very frustrating seeing that my car breaks down on the highway going around 60 to 70 mph. The first time it happened my mechanic figured it was the coil but couldn't figure out why it was consistently dying. So far I've changed the spark plug wires, distributor, and the rotor. I'm about to take another long trip so I'm a little pensive about traveling not knowing what to expect. Do you have any suggestions?

Maybe there is a short somewhere in the cable going to the coil ? I would check the entire cable and see

 

It sounds like you might need a new camshaft position sensor that sits in the distributor. If you do a search for camshaft position sensor you will see its a common problem and will cause it to shut down unexpectingly then probably star an hour later

 

You might want to check your engine to body ground straps as if they are not clean and grounded this MAY cause what you are describing. Also check your CAT. and all the other suggestions on this thread.

 

What gap are you running on the spark plugs?

 

There are 2 kind of spark plugs. One with resistor in it and one without. I am not 100% sure, but I think that jeep require resistor plugs because of magnetic pick-up. Non-resistor plugs can burn a coil.
