Default Cherokee help!

I've been out looking for a cherokee and have been finding that so far the ones I've looked at are "full time" 4 wheel drive. My question is, when did they make "part time" 4x4s and whats the model name? thanks, Jerry

It all has to do with the transfer case option that was built into it. I believe what you're looking for is the NP 242 or "Selectrac". This one has 2WD, 4WD partime, 4WD fulltime, and 4Lo. You can tell by looking at the shifter. The t-case option was determined by the guy who ordered it when it was built.

Are you looking for Cherokee's or Grand cherokees?

Dont know why you are searching so hard for the "part time" option..the ones with full time also have part time.

A little lesson:
NP 231(Made by New process gear, hence the name NP) is a part time only transfer case. You can only use the 4x4 option "part-time"..you cannot use this case on dry pavement.

NP 242: A fulltime/parttime transfer case. You can use the full-time option to drive on pavement.

Both transfer cases have 2WD HI 4WD HI and 4WD Low

There is more aftermarket support for the 231.. I prefer the 231..just because its aftermarket support..but either are just fine.

There are no particular years in which these were used.

Thanks guys, that was a great help! I'm prolly looking for a Grand Cherokee, XJ88 but I'm open. Mostly to be used for ski trips so thats the interest in part time 4wd.
