Hi I was wondering if there was a way I could get the codes on a 97 ZJ without a code reader? I kno my dads 98 dodge ram had a key trick? My CEL came on on my way to work then when I got to work and as soon as the engine reached idle speed it died. The only way it will start and run is you pin it to start and keep the revs around 1k any help is appreciated. Oh and its the 5.2 V8

 

Cycle your ignition key on and off 3 times quickly the last time being on and watch your CEL light or odometer for the code numbers.

 

Ok cool thanks. It was just like WTF ran fine all the way til I got to a point where it would have to go down to idle speed

 

yea the key trick works. It wont pinpoint what cyl a misfire is coming from but it will tell you the general code.

and when you do it, remember 12 means the battery was disconnected in the last 50 starts, and 55 is the end of the codes

 

Ok cool. It didnt seem like its misfiring cuz it runs fine smooth as silk at 1k or higher ran fine across the entire RPM range yesterday and idled fine tonight then the CEL came on then I git to work and as soon as she went to idle she just shut off
