Default catalytic converter

My car makes a loud rattling noise during most things. I have put my jeep on a lift and spent a good amount of time trying to figure out what it is. I am now sure its the cat. Now I know there is laws about the cat. But my big thing is this part is over 250$ and you can't find it in a junk yard because of the platinum. No I know about the rules and labor. But what about hollowing it out? Have you done it? I should I just suck it up and pay the money. Labor is not a issue. I am happy to work on my jeep.

If you look around you may find it a few $ cheaper, i usually buy exhaust at summitracing.com

Hollowing out a cat is illegal as well.

Or how does one replace it? I see some welds, do I need to weld? Or is there clamps that I am not seeing?

Welding it up is the preferred method. If you go with clamps get band clamps, they tend to leak less than the u-bolt style clamps.

You can buy a direct fit converter for less than $250.. much much less than $250. They are typically bolt on.

I just had to replace mine. I got it a cost $101.00. it's a direct replacment. my cat was rattling pretty bad, after going offroading I had hit it on a boulder and it came apart inside occationaly plugging the exhaust killing the engine.the factory cat/muffler set up is held on by 2 u-bolt clamps. if you remove the clamps you'll still need to cut some slits in the outer pipe so you can spread it and slide (beat) it off. I'd recommend replacing the muffler at the same time, because anything that broke out of the cat will end up in the muffler anyways. my ZJ has 137,000 miles on it and still had the OEM cat and muffler. it is important to keep the cat in the OEM location so the O2 sensors will read correctly and not throw a fault code. I ended up replacing the cat and muffler (flowmaster ) and the entire tailpipe with 2 1/2" pipe. my ZJ is still 50 state smog legal, runs better now and sounds good as well.

I have never tried to hollow it out. I hope to see some updates of your work. I am curious about how it is going.

I hollowed mine out a few months ago and couldnt believe the increase in power. It was running pretty rough it was so clogged up. The thing would occasionally back fire and then one day about an hour away from home, the damn thing blew the muffler almost in half. Then it was really loud. I bought the cat and muffler from Auto Zone or it might of been Advanced for like $150 for both. Had someone put it on for $80 I think. I hate my Jeep.

I spent $50 and a few hours of my time. Replaced cat with straight pipe and put on a thrush muffler. MPG is way up, it sounds great, and performance got a huge kick in the ***.

It's not enforced in my state, at all. Hell just about any shop here openly offers catalytic elimination as a regular service. In any event there was just a full thread about my exhaust issue and nobody shut it down. I figured its because they realize it is not even an issue in West MI.

And for what its worth my truck no longer smells like a gas pump or has nasty smoke coming out.
