My GF has a 93 GC an it needs a trans an I was wondering if I could swap in an AW4 out of a Cherokee? Or if anyone has any ideas as to why it won't shift into OD?

As far no OD, make sure the TCC solenoid is getting power. the signal goes through the Brake Switch. When the pedal is pressed the TC unlocks. A misadjusted switch will prevent lock-up.

Is it a factory equipped AW4 ZJ? Do you have a P-N-D-3-21 shift pattern where 1st and 2nd are same position at bottom? Only the early production 93's had them.

If yes you can swap in an XJ AW4. If not your ZJ has a 42re trans which is controlled by the PCM and not a stand alone TCU computer for the transmission.

There are guys who attempted to convert to an AW4 but there are issues, i dont know of anyone who got it right yet.

You would need a 23 spline output AW4.

My 95ZJ with a 4.0 has a stand alone TCM for the 42RE right next to the air cleaner assembly.

Really.. guess i passed bad info. You sure it doesnt communicate with the PCM?

From what i have read this is why those attempting the 42re to AW4 swap have issues with the trans shifting.. unless done manually.

I'd sure like to know a proven method of this swap.

The TCM and PCM both "talk" to eachother, but they are at two different locations under the hood.

You can NOT swap a AW4 into a ZJ with a 42RE with out TONS of wiring changes. The 42RE Does talk to your TCM and PCM. I did this research back when I had my 94' WAY more work than it is worth.

In order to do it and make it work will require almost the whole harness being rewired from scratch..

The only ZJ that came factory with a AW4 is teh 1/3 of the '93 4.0L years..

Thanks for that info now where can I find this solenoid that isn't letting it going into OD?
