Can shift out of park no key in ignition
I'm able to shift out of park without the key in the ignition. Initially my BTSI (brake transmission shift interlock mechanism) broke. The windings in the solenoid went open and the btsi failed to operate. I replaced the BTSI and it appears to operate as it should. With the key in run start, I now have to depress the brake pedal to shift out of park (as it should); however I can still take it out of park when the key is not in the ignition. I'm assuming that the btsi only operated when the key is in the run start position and that some other device should lock the transmission in park when no key is in the ignition. I've already checked and i do have brake lights. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks

It serves as a reminder when I try to remove my keys that I should have to put the vehicle in park. Safety item.

Were the repairs done by yourself or a shop? Look everything over, maybe something was not hooked back in or is unclipped, maybe misadjusted. Perhaps put back together in a wrong location. Initially I was thinking linkage issue, but you stated everything else works as it should, and you did not complain of being tough to get into or out of gears. If you had a shop do it, bring it back, You shouldnt have to pay because they messed something up.

I did the work myself but see no other option but to carry it to a mechanic. I suspect a control relay or a solenoid in the transmission. Not really comfortable going in there. The relay and solenoid in the transmission are nearly $200 for the parts alone. I don't think I'll take the gamble this time by trying to fix it myself. Thanks

There should be a shift interlock cable that provides this function. Check your vehicle to see if it has this cable system. There is an adjustment procedure that you do to get the system right.

the brake transmission shift interlock cable provides that function when the ignition switch is in the on or run position. You don't want constant drain on the battery while the vehicle is not running, so there must be a mechanican device that keeps the vehicle locked in park when the is not running;
