Anyone had to do this with their Cherokee? It looks like a big job and I was wondering if there was an alternative to pulling down the dash to change the core?

There seems to be two types of Evaporator Cores.

1. With Automatic Temperature Control
1. With Manual Temperature Control

How do I know which one I have or need for my 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 5.2L?

 

Does yours have two ***** and a digital display? That's the ATC. Or does it have three *****, I'll send you a Private Message with a scan from the manual showing you the difference.
Also, if you're replacing the Evap. core yourself and don't have a manual, I can scan the necessary pages if needed.

$635 to have a local mechanic pull the dash, replace the e-coil and get it up and running.

 

I am in the middle of this project right now. It DOES suck!

You've got a Cherokee, not a Grand, right? What year?

 

Ol Blue - I have a Haynes repair manual for this procedure. Are the instructions you have different? If so can you PM me with the pages?

I've done a Evap core on a Right hand drive cherokee. Its all a bunch of little bolts and screws. It took me the friday night and all of saturday to get it done. 1st time doing it.

Dealer was gonna charge my girlfriends mom $1,000 for the job. They paid me $400 to do it. Best thing of all, I have NO Extra screws left over. Win for me!!!

when you order the evap, order the foam gaskets that go around the heater hoses and a/c lines. Those you will ahve to cut to split the HVAC box to remove the condensor. About $70 i think

Also make sure to be carefull when putting the dash back on over the HVAC box. I had a vaccum line come off a door mode actuator[air would only go out the defrost]. Lucky I was able to take the radio dash bezel off and use a pair of surgical needle nose plyiers to grab the vacuum line and put it back on the actuator.

Take your time. doing it yourself is worth the $500+ you save.

I took some pictures, if you get into trouble, I can try to answer your questinos the best I can.

no you dont really need any special tools all small metric 5.5, 8, 10 etc
and you dont have to take the dash out. take out both front seats, center console, unbolt the column from the dash and lay it on the floor.DO NOT undo the steering shaft. If you have airbags you can damage the clockspring. Unbolt the dash and swing it from the passenger side to the drivers side and tie it back with the drivers seat belt.
forgot to mention that you will need ac disconnect tools. You should be able to get a local parts store(they are the ford style ones)
