Cool Burning Gas!!!! **** POOR MPG!!!

Ok, so this just started. I don't know what is going on. I thought someone was stealing my gas, but i don't think that is the case. I don't have any check engine lights on, but i am burning gas like no body's business. I have only been like 40 miles and have used 1/4 tank of gas. Mind you i have a standard 20 gallon tank. so that comes out to be like 5 gallons used on 40 miles. that is like 10 miles a gallon, and this only does it ABOVE 1/2 tank. once i get below 1/2 tank, i can go like 200 more miles. I don't know what is going on. i changed my spark plugs and checked all my vacuum lines to make sure they were all intact and connected. I am wondering if it could be my o2 sensors. but i am not sure. i should prolly change them, but i dont have the extra cash to do so and being that the gas is only used on the top 1/2 of my tank i find it weird.

Like i stated, this just started like 2 weeks ago. I am completely stumped as no error lights are coming on. I have had my codes read though and the only one was an evap emissions small leak. which is not too important where i live. We don't have emissions requirements. So idk what is going on. Has anyone else had similar problems, and if so, what did you do to fix it? i thought about the o2 sensors and the MAP sensors but i don't have the extra funds to just be replacing random things that aren't going to fix this issue. Thank a bunch everyone.

Jayson

I was so flustered that i forgot to put all that info in lol. its a 99 WJ, 4x4, 4.0L, V6 straight, automatic transmission, and roughly 150,000 on the motor and 190,000 on the transmission.

like i stated previously, it just started this like 2 weeks ago. ive had the vehicle since Dec, 17th

Your EVAP code is most likely a faulty gas cap. Does it smell rich at the pipe? Blowing black soot?

Checked all your tire pressures and for off-alignment and dragging brakes?

well i haven't had any codes pop up in 2 weeks since i had them cleared. and the tailpipe does have like black soot on the rim. i changed all the spark plugs and the first 2 or 3 were running a little rich and then the back 3 were a little lean. but what confuses me is that on the 1st half of my gas tank i will go like 80 miles but then on the bottom half i can go like 200 more. so i am wondering if i have a faulty sensor in the tank or if there is a small crack on the top half that is causing some evaporation. there is also a small chug. not bad just a little (im going to try to describe it) putt putt putt. ===*_*_*_*_* (supposed to be a tailpipe and the small bursts of air.) lol. it just has me confused.
