1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. With headlights off one brake light bright and the other dim. With headlights on tail lights look normal until brake applied then the one that was dim before goes out entirely and the other brake light goes bright. Bought a new bulb, same problem. If I switch the sockets left and right the problem reverses sides. I’ve tried swapping the sockets around in different configurations and the problem still exists. Anyone ever have this problem and if so what’s the fix.

 

Had the same problem, tried to clean up the socket contacts, but the surrounding plastic was so brittle from age and heat that it crumbled and wouldn’t hold the bulb securely which made the problem worse, at that point I quit messing around and bought new sockets and LED bulbs, problem solved...
