I have a 94GC that binds up when turning in parking lots or at low speed, I've been told its the VC. I've decided to just scrap the 249TC and replace it with a 242TC, however, I am wondering if I need to also buy a shifter assembly or will the one already in the jeep work.
Specs are as follows:
1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
5.2L QuadraTrac

Welcome to CF!
The shifter itself will work, but you'll be feeling for the gears unless you change the shifter bezel as well. You also may not have the neutral detent.

That's a matter of choice and availability. The 231 is stronger and more plentiful, but 4wd is part time only. The 242 is my choice for a box because it gives you full time 4wd as well. Check out http://jeepforum.com/forum/f13/trans...-np242-685644/
