I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0, 2wd, with air. Recently my Jeep began to have what sounds like the belt slipping when in gear. I replaced the belt and the idler pulleys, but still I get the noise only when the Jeep is in gear. In park or neutral there is no noise. The sound does lessen when the engine heats up but does not entirely go away.
I have been told that I may need to buy a gatorback style belt. Does anyone have any other suggestions.

I have tightened and also loosened it. I have done almost everything possible with the belt. I thought it was strange that it would only squeal while in gear and under load.
A gatorback should not be required.
Check all your pullies, then. And a motor under load is different than at idle, it doeant much surprise me, but does sound like its too loose.

Have you tried turning on all of your electrical items while its at idle? Had a car awhile back (last year) that had it's Alternator bearing gone bad. It caused the pulley to shift a bit when it was under load thereby causing the belt squeal.
Just a thought

Yes I have tried that. I also thought it could be the alternator going bad. I have heard something called glazing on the pulleys. My Jeep has 212000 miles and except for the pulleys I have replaced all look stock. Could this be causing the belt squeal. I have tightened the belt some more and have notice the noise goes away when the engine and belt warm up. I do not think the belt will tighten anymore at this point
Here is my overall thought...
These were designed to not squeel. So if it still squeels, something is wrong, and needs to be fixed.
There really arent that many possibilities, so either something was overlooked, or not checked at all.

I appreciate all the responses. I should mention the engine has 213000 miles on it. After checking everything again and trying some of the responses i have noticed i have crank jump and that the belt squeals when the crank jumps. I have a feeling I will have to live with the noise until my next project which will be a engine rebuild
