Does the actual compressor leak? I was told I had a leaking compressor and that i needed a new one. I have never heard of that and just wanted to see if I was being fooled. I don't have any reason not to trust the mechanic as of yet, but this was a new service center for me.

Yes they do leak, from the shaft seal behind the pulley, or from other locations where the compressor is bolted together. Fairly common.
