Default Axle change oil.. what kind of oil can I used?

Hi, I want to change the oil axle on my Grand Cherokee Laredo 2000. Chrysler recommand to take SAE80W90 or if you tow trailler or intense work they recommand to take SAE75W140 Synthetic oil.

I found SAE85W140 regular oil for a quart of the price of synthetic oil, can I used it?

Thank's in advance for your answers.

No, I wouldn't. If you don't do any towing you should be able to find 80W90 just about anywhere as it's the most common gear oil. WalMart has it.

Most of the time reg is cheaper than syn. I don't see a problem with the 85/140.

85W-140 won't cause you any trouble, I use it as a matter of course (I use my rig as a work truck - anything from "going to pick up a load" to "carrying three times its own weight".)

Just make sure it's rated GL-5, as that will have the EP additives that will help your gears last. Also, make sure of whether or not you have an LSD in your rear axle - if you do, be sure to add Friction Modifier if the oil you're getting doesn't specifically list it.

I'll make sure for GL5 and EP additive and yes my rear axle have a LSD and I have the right additive for it.

If you don't tow, get the lower numbers (75W-90, probably.) You'll need the lower viscosity for colder climes...

1) There should be a tag to that effect (or "Use LSD Additive", or somesuch) under one of the screw holes near the top of the cover.

2) If the tag is gone (likely,) then check for clutch packs under the side gears next time you have the cover off.

3) If it's a Dana, get the BoM number (right-hand tube, near the cast centre section, back side) and run it on the Dana Expert Site (www.dana.com, follow the links.) Since the tendency is to swap out an open diff for an LSD - and not the other way about - if the BoM sez you have one, you probably do.

The BoM follows the pattern "60xxxx-yy" or "61xxxx-yy" - it's a six-digit number starting with "60" or "61" and has a one- or two-digit suffix. It can tell you what year (down to a bracket, usually) and make/model of vehicle the axle was originally under, the gear ratio it originally had, and the differential type it left the factory with - of course, there's no accounting for changes in the intervening time.
