Hi All,
I've only had my first Jeep about two months ago, its a GC AWD 4.0L. What concerns me is that for instance i need to get out a parking space using full lock...well the jeep seems to be in 4WD & starts trying to hop.
Is this normal characteristics on AWD's ???
Thanks Alan...

Part time. To use 4wd all the time you should be in 4full time and you'll be able to turn etc etc. If you are in anything else, 4 part time or 4lo, you'll damage TC and driveline

I'm guessing you have the NP249 t-case. Your VC is going out. Do some research on it and you will figure out how to go about replacing/fixing it.

Doubt he has a 249 with a 4.0 those were behind the v8 only I think not the 4.0,So i'm sure he has the 242 ,and to the OP it's full time 4 not all wheel drive. And to the OP you can tell if you have the 249 or 242 simply by looking the shifter the 249 only has 4hi...N...4o if you got more options than this you have the 242 ...that's what my brothers 96 had with the 4.0

Hey u guys: isn't the 249 supposed to hop a little bit when turned fully to the left or right? I've had a mechanic drive my ZJ and he said it was normal. I've had other ZJ owners with 249's says it's normal as well. The 249 is full time 4WD; so isn't it normal to get that 4WD hop?

Probably a little I can't recall if my 95 had much noticeable bind in tight turns , But the early model 249 93-95 is like an open differential in that it will bias torque to the axle with little or no traction , and it has no LO -LOCK in 4lo so in 4lo it's no different than 4-HI ...unlike a 249 with lo lock that in 4-lo the front/rear turm at equal rates all the time like a 231 in 4full time ...this also means a 93-95 249 can be driven on dry pavement in 4-lo as the only difference between 4-hi and 4-lo is the gear reduction .
