Default Another T-case or Trans. problem.

I bought a 97 grand cherokee 5.2 liter with 240k mile's on it. I already knew that it was something wrong in either the transfer case (249) or the transmission. Well i went to load it on the trailer friday and the front tire's went up but when the back got to the ramp's it was like it flew out of gear, the transfer case or transmission made kind of a wizzing grinding sound and you could move the leaver with one finger all the way forward and to the back while still in drive. I took out the t-case and if you turn the input shaft both output shaft's turn even shifting from high to low. Every thing in the case seem's to work smoothly. Should I open it up and look inside, or am I wasting my time when it could be the transmission? There has been work done to the transmission at some point because there is yellow writing on the pan.

when you say lever do you mean transfer case lever or the trans shifter lever?

"you could move the leaver with one finger all the way forward and to the back while still in drive." on iPhone app, can't quote.
The T-case lever moves freely while trans shift lever in park. Sounds like the T-case but I'm no mechanic.

It is the transfer case shifter! But I found a transmission at a junk yard for $400.00 and the junk yards and repair shops said it was the transmission. So I guess I will try that. Thanks!
