42re that can't get its shifts together!
I have a 1998 4.0 gc that seems to not start moving in first gear, even if done manually, i believe it is in second. Until it is warmed up, I must keep shifter in 1 when stopping, or it will stutter and die when coming to a stop. It feels like driving a manual trans, and not pushing in the clutch when coming to a stop. After it is warm I can leave shifter in drive position for the entire trip. Other times even if engine is warm it will stutter and die when coming to stop. Acceleration from a stop is dismal, near impossible if starting on a incline. Drives well once drive/od is reached (35+ mph). New problem just started of dying at any given moment while idling, and idle now surging.
Tranny shop scanned and had no codes. I asked if governor sensor and soldnoid could be problem, they didn't believe so. They said it drives as if converter clutch not disengaging sometimes, but have never encountered this problem before. A total rebuild was suggested, I declined hoping for a less expense repair.
I flushed cooler and lines, changed checkvalve on cooler line, and changed fluid and filter. Attempted to adjust tv cable (unsure if done properly), checked voltage of tps, with no improvement at all.
I would really appreciated any advice to resolve these issues in this bundle of joy. Funds just aren't there to trial and error every sensor or transducer on a vehicle I need to sell anyway, but can't pass this problem off on someone else, like was done to me. Other than this, the jeep runs great. Many thanks in advance for advice or just taking the time to read this. -Tim

IAC will not effect the trans itself but can produce similar symptoms. did you try the key on/off for any codes? i know you said the tranny shop scanned but.....
