Air only from defroster.. A/C not cold.. Need Help
2002 GCL 4.0 6cy.. First, the a/c would only be cool on the driver side and middle and warm on the passenger side. I did a recharge and all vents only blow out warm air with the a/c on. The heater works fine. Now, it only blows out of the defroster. I checked the white pin that controls the blend doors and it seems to working. The motor is working as well. I took off the radio faceplate and was able to see the middle vent. I pushed it back and air came out of the vents once again, but closed when I removed the pin. Usually when I turn off the car and turn off the a/c, i always hear a sound ( as if air was getting let out of a tire or something) but i don't hear that sound any longer. The compressor kicks on and seems to be working. There is no water dripping when the air is on. Could it be something with the drainage? Should I just take it in and have someone look at it? I'm lost right now and need some help. I have a 3 month baby and it gets hot in the car and hate to have him in it.... any help is much appreciated...thanks

Generally the system will fail to the defrost position for safety reasons when something isn't right.. if there is a leak in the vacuum system to the AC.it will fail to defrost... what I don't understanding is why the compressor is kickijng on but still no cold air... I wonder if they drained the system but messed up with the machine and didn't put freon back in... although if there wasn't freon in the system then the compressor would not kick in... so guess I'm not much help as it seems your Jeep is defying the normal system operation... lol...

If I had to guess I would say the circuit board inside your AC switch is fried.. that would explain why things have been failing one by one... but that's just a guess... Theres not much to a AC system really..

It was a machine and not a handheld bottle. Thanks*************update-- Today I disconnected the batter for about an hour and re-connected. I tried the a/c and air is coming out of the vents now like normail but i'm still getting warm air and not cold air. Any thoughts?

Geez, really throwing curve ***** here, lmao. I would say, that if the compressor is engaging as it should, and it's still blowing warm, sounds strongly like its low on Freon, or as Huntingman said, maybe the system was never re-charged for whatever reason.
But on the same token, it still should attempt to be draining. I'm not gonna lie, I don't recall where the WJ A/C drainage runs, (and I did one last week! ) But I'm sure one of these GC guys would know. On the First gen Grand Cherokee, it dumps into the frame rail, and can be accessed passenger-side under hood, far left corner in the frame rail. Usually sticking an air wand in there and blowing out both that and the cowl will work, but as I said, I don't know if WJ have the same setup.
Do you know if they put dye in the system when they did a re-charge? Sorry to keep asking stupid questions, just trying to help out. Good luck & keep us informed.

Definitly sounds like vacuum leak somewhere.. my 92 xi did the same thing. There is a small vacuum canister under the front bumper that may be damaged. Or like mine and completely missing! But you should search for a vacuum leak for sure. One vacuum line operates your cruise control, 4x4 and climate control. So look for that canister under the bumper and follow the line back up and make sure its all in good shape and that should fix her problem.
