Default Air compressor problems

I am very new to this forum or any forum, but sure looks like I have been missing something really nice. I just bought a 1996 Grand Cherokee with all wheel drive and the 5.2 v-8. Trying to get all the little things done for 146K, most fluids changed, all new brakes and rotors, but now the clutch on the ac compressor is not working and makes a heck of a noise when it tries to turn. Have moved the compressor with a wrench, there is r134 in it and made sure by bypassing to compressor clutch with 12v. Never worked on ac so is all new as a lot of these new cars are for me, I worked on 1946 to 1960 cars mostly. Not sure how to take clutch off and would appreciate any help I can get. Do not want to replace compressor even though its not much more than the clutch itself. Please, tell me how to take it off.

Remove the center bolt from the compressor clutch hub. Install a 10mm bolt into the hub and tighten to remove the hub (watch for shims/washers behind hub on compressdor shaft) . If you dont have a 10mm bolt handy, just borrow one off the jeep. With the hub off, remove snap ring and then the pulley, sometimes the pulley might wiggle off, other times you might have to tap on it to remove. With pulley off, there should be another snap ring holding the field coil on the compressor.

Thanks Jnicewan for the reply, but being this old I am still hitting my head on a wall. If I take the center bolt out and put in a 10mm how is that going to take the hub off. Am I suspose to pull on this 10mm to remove the hub? I know it sounds dumb but I am one of those old folks you have to take by the hand to get him to understand anything. Thats what I love about this forum, got some neat folks on it. Please, a little more in depth. Thanks in advance.

Jnicewan I figure you are out making a living so I went down to the jeep and took out the little bolt and behold there was a bigger thread on the inside before where the little one takes hold. Duh! I now understand what to do. Thanks a million and will give it a shot when my next ssn check comes in.

Yes, those larger threads are what I was talking about. Tightening a bolt into those will push the hub off.
