99 GC rear brakes lit up
My son's '99 GC came home last night with the rear driver side rotor glowing bright orange. We were going to break out the weinies and have a roast, but the wind was howlin' so we let them cool down. He was wondering why the caliper (?) would lock up some of the time and not others. He also had a hellacious squeal come out of the same wheel last week. A couple shots from a hammer bent the dust shield back and the sound went away. Could he have damaged the caliper/rotor in doing this? Or, is this a common problem with the '99? I know they changed the calipers in '02. Any suggestions? He's on his way to the boneyard now. I just need to know the cause or problems that GC'c incur. Thanx.

front calipers changed, not the rear, so that is not related. Any chance he had the parking brake on slightly? It is a small drum brake on the inside of the disk caliper?

He said no, but that's not to say that it couldn't have happened. I told him to make sure he releases the brakes every time and to also keep checking on them frequently, since this is what happened to my old VW. He got a caliper from the local boneyard and got it in. It seems to work for now. I just told him to keep checking on it. Thanx.

grand cherokee brakes are very sensitive to torque on teh caliper bolts. Did he do the install or did he have it installed? If he installed it how did he bleed the brakes? having ABS you usually have to have the brakes bleed professioneally unless you have the very expensive DRBIII scan tool to turn on the abs pump to insure all the air is out of the pump as well as the lines.
