Default 98 jeep grand cherokee

I'm not getting any speed it gradually pulls off real slow when I pull off and goes about 40 mph what is wrong do I need to change the timing because it act like its trying to get in gear it goes in first gear but I can't get to second gear

Welcome to CF.
Check the transmission fluid for correct amount and the color/smell to see if it's burnt.

Sounds like your in limp mode. It's not that your missing second gear, your taking off in second and thats why you don't feel the shift.
Don't keep driving it like that or you will cause more problem. Check for codes and fluid condition
