96 ZJ fuel too rich

96 ZJ fuel too rich
6 cyl auto. Runs ok most of the time. Sometimes on startup in the morning, runs very rough and cat converter glows red. Exhaust smells of raw gas. Start up later the same day and it runs fine.

Try turning the key on for ignition, then waiting a minute or two before you crank it. It sounds like a lazy 02 sensor heater circuit or a failing 02 sensor.
OR just change the bloody sensor! Check the 02 wiring harness for internally broken wires or burnt from the exhaust header. also, being that old, check for spliced/pigtailed wires. The 02 sensor operates at around 1 volt. Bad connections are not good.
