96 Jeep Cherokee Engine Stalling Please help
I have a 96 Grand Cherokee Laredo. The best car I have owned. Recently the engine stalls while I am driving. The rpm gage drops to zero. The interior lights stay on it just the engine dies. Sometimes it pop starts back up but sometimes I have to muscle it over to the side of the road, put it in part and then start it. It doesn't run rough or anything. When it runs it sounds fine. At first it only happend once or twice but now it happens everytime I try to drive it. I took it in to the shop around the corner, they hooked it up but did not find any codes, They didn't see anything wrong. It has 155,000 miles on it. It was tuned up last year. Has anyone had this problem or have an idea of what I should look for.

Exact thing happened to my 99GC. Just today I replaced the crank positioning sensor and fixed the problem.
it also would show a dash light indication "air bag" occasionally.
had a code reader put on it an hour after it quit on the freeway and NO CODES were indicated on mine as well.

I agree with the previous replies and suggest that you replace the crankshaft position sensor. It is located on the top left of the transmission bell housing and is best accessed with a long socket extension and a good light or second person to help guide the socket. I have solved similar stalling and no-start problems on 1988 through 1996 Cherokees and Grand Cherokees. There were no trouble codes set.
