96 Grand cherokee front drive shaft- cv to u-joint conversion
I have a 96 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.2l V8. The front axle is a Dana 30 and the Rear is a Dana 44. It has a 249 transfercase.
From what I've read I have a cv type joint on the front driveshaft. How do you swap it for u-joints?

Go to the j/y.
Find an xj.
Remove calipers, rotors and unit bearing.
Remove axleshafts.
Reverse procedure to install into your grand.
That's all there is to it.
Might as well replace ujoints and axle seals now. Also goodtime to do bearings and brakes now too.
May also be a good time to replace cv driveshaft and yoke while your at it.
Do your ball joints now too while everythings apart.
I did it all in one shot and am glad I did. Took no time at all.
Maybe three hours total. Though I did it at work with full tools, lift snx shop air.
Easy sleazy. Take your time.

Direct swap, that is why you find one out of a 4.0 ZJ, some years XJs also work but the 4.0 ZJ is easier to find! Make sure the 4.0 doesnt have the NP249 otherwise it will be the same front drive shaft as the V8s!

Why? Are you looking for a new one? Just go to a shop that specializes in heavy truck driveline parts and they'll set you up. I bought my 89 Chevy truck without a front driveshaft and they gave me exactly what I needed without any fuss. The guys are right about the axle yoke, you'll need one.
