96 Cherokee / Auto / 4.0 Intermittently not wanting to shift
Hello,
I have been having n issue in the past few days where my Transmission doesn't want to shift..
It will seem to hang up going from 2nd to 3rd
I have read here and elsewhere that it "Could" be the TPS (seems a common issue)
However I am not getting an Engine light and the guys at auto zone have not been able to pull a code from it. This is also troubling as it will suddenly start to shift just fine, and sometimes gives me no real issues at all... It comes and goes.
If it is the TPS going out, should it give me a check engine light and it is possible that it will act perfectly fine at times and a complete spoiled brat others?
Any Thoughts, Ideas or Revelations would be most appreciated.
Sorry just noticed i put this in the grand Cherokee forum... mine is not ... sorry don't beat the new guy.

does throttle input make any difference? when it hangs, if you let off the throttle will it shift? these had a couple throttle valve updates. they usually cause more of a shuttle shift than a hang.
you can get out your volt meter and check the tps through its range. should have a clean sweep of 0-5v through its range. if it has a dead spot or or does not sweep smoothly that would be a good start.
Also search for tv vable adjustment. make sure that it is adjusted correctly.
I have also ran into issued with the output speed sensors not setting codes but starting to go bad and causing problems.

I have a similar issue. It seems to shift at the wrong times and in idle it will idle rough at a really low RPM and sometimes stall. I've replaced the TPS, CPS, cleaned the grounds, reset the battery checked for codes but nothing. I'm really stuck. A point in the right direction would help both of us out!
thanks in advance!
