hey folks I started this account because I couldn’t find the answer to my question on the interwebs. I recently picked up a bone stock 95 zj 4x4 limited with a 4.0 for free. The rear output seal of the trans is leaking pretty bad. I’m trying to figure out what tranny it has. I also have a 93 zj limited that I know has a 42re. The tranny on the 95 looks very similar except the dip stick crosses over the tranny and comes up on the driver side behind the intake. My 93’s dipstick comes out on the passenger side above the engine dipstick. At first I thought whoever may have worked on the jeep installed the dipstick tube wrong but it has factory brackets that put it in this position. According to the chilton manual, the 42RH dipstick crosses over to the driver side like mine does. But In searching the internet iv also read several times that the 42rh never came in the Zj with a 4.0. Just the aw4 and 42re. Any ideas? Has anyone ever seen a 4.0 zj with the tranny dipstick behind the intake like that? Thanks for the help
My 95 ZJ (4.0L) has the 42RE transmission with the dip stick on the drivers side.
The 42RE 4 speed automatic transmission was used in 1993.5 to present Jeep Grand Cherokees with 4.0L engines
The 44RE 4 speed automatic transmission was used in 1996 to present Jeep Grand Cherokees with 5.2L engines.
The 46RH 4 speed automatic transmission was used in 1993 to 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokees with 5.2L engines.
I'm uncertain which vehicles and years the 42RH was used. I found a post where the author claims the 42RH was used in Jeeps with a 4.0L but it was considered rare to find one. Apparently the bell housings don't match so it would be difficult to swap.
RH differs from the RE mainly because of the hydraulic controls. RE = electronic, RH = hydraulic.
From what I've read online the 42RH was never used in a Grand Cherokee, only the 46RH.
The 42RE was first used in Jeep Cherokee vehicles in late 1993, until it was replaced by the 42RLE in 2004. It is a four speed, automatic overdrive, electronically controlled transmission, which differs from the 42RH transmission because of the hydraulic control.
