Default 2000 Grand Cherokee Stalls for no apparent reason

Hey guys! Just joined your group because I'm pulling what's left of my hair out! Need Help! I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee LTD, 4.7 8cyl, Quadra Drive with 83k on it.This Jeep is the closest thing to a luxury vehicle I've ever had. About 2 yrs ago, it would stall while the wife was driving. Out of the blue, without warning and for no apparent reason and always in the worst possible places. All electrical would still work, eg; radio, lights, dash, and it would even turn over without starting. It would do it only after it reached operating temp. She'd let it sit for 10 minutes and it would fire right up and get her home It did it to me a few times, same M.O. So, I changed: Fuel pump, filter, & battery, and about $350 worth of sensors. I diligently cleaned every electrical contact, ground and plug (2 days worth). It still did it. Saw a fix on you tube that involved zip-tying ECM Ports. This actually had the most effect and the Jeep actually ran fine for about 3 months without any stalling. Then, about a month ago, it's doing it again. My Grand Cherokee is immaculate and we've taken very good care of it. About to sell it for $1500 as a mechanics special! ANY thoughts or help would be immensely appreciated!!! Mark in Daytona

Are you getting any codes? My 2000, 4.7 did the same thing. I had it diagnosed by a trusted mechanic and it was the PCM. Sometimes that cheap fix to the PCM works. Sometimes not. I had no codes when my PCM failed. I would suggest looking closer at the PCM. If you need one. Your best bet is from Cardone, or the dealer.

Thanx for taking the time to write! Never threw even 1 code... EVER! I take that back, I did replace a couple of the sensors due to the codes, but it was actually during the time that it was running well. My ugly Brother-in-Law and I were figuring the PCM needs to be replaced. I've heard some horror stories about getting bad PCMs from anybody but the dealer. Dealer wants $600! Thanx again for responding!

The dealer can be pricey, but a safer bet. Try looking on line for a company that sells authorized MOPAR parts. They are often MUCH less expensive than the local dealer. I recall just checking a PCM recently through one of these places and it was significantly cheaper than what I paid 2 years ago. The local dealer is still going to charge you to program it. If you live in a metropolitan area, shop different dealers for the best price. The good news if there is any, is the MOPAR rebuild comes a 3-year warranty. A real one. Not one of these trumped up lifetime warranties the hack rebuilders in South Florida throw at you and don't follow through. You have a low mileage WJ. Hard to find, and you have spent a lot on it. Not sure what you paid for it, but its worth more than $1500. If I were in your shoes, I'd hold onto it and replace the PCM .

Thanx again! I'm thinking I'd never get rid of the Grand Cherokee. We've had it for almost 8 years and are the 2nd owners, with 45k miles on it. It's a lot of fun showing the kids around here that a top of the line luxury Jeep can go just about anywhere the Wranglers can go. I guess I'll just put the PCM in and go that route. I'll let you know how it turns out! Thanx again, Mark in Daytona

It might be worth an hour of a trusted mechanics time, to verify that it definitely is the PCM. Around here we can pay $100-$150 a hour for labor. Its up to you but if I were going to invest that much into a car part, I'd make sure I needed to. Another option is a parts rebuilder called Cardone. You can go to your local parts dealer and order a PCM through them. Cardone supplies the rebuilt PCM through them. I have heard better things about them on this forum and one other than I have about the hacks in South Florida that advertise on EBAY. They are also less expensive than the dealer. Let us know how it goes.

Yes, my 2000 WJ is complicated enough, but I can still repair it, so I'm keeping it until it's ready for the shredder. With a small lift and some bottom armor, it'll go anywhere I'd care to go. I bought it mainly for snow and it hasn't been stopped yet. I slid into a ditch once, put it in low range, and backed out. 226K miles on a 4.0

226K is pretty impressive. I have a 2000 with the 4.7. It still shifts and runs like new at 152K. I am hesitant to take it on long trips though. I hope I get a little more out of it. Haveyou put major bucks in that engine to keep it running for that far?

We're in Florida but have had our WJ in deep snow, snotty mud, even on a frozen lake and it really does go wherever you point it! I love going on trails with the A/C on and sitting on leather seats!

Only replaced a cracked cylinder head. At this point it could use a timing chain, probably. My rear axle blew up last month and the front axle is starting to whine, but the 42re is still strong. When the axle blew, the t/case popped out of 2wd and now it won't engage in 2wd. I probably have a bent shift fork, but I'll worry about that in the spring.
