You probably need the O-ring that is inside the adapter housing, they tend to leak over time. That or theres some old gasket left on the mating surface.

its not a slow leak its creating too much oil pressure and blows the gasket out. Didnt know if there was a common cause of this. Thanks

Did you hook up a mechanical gauge to read actual pressure and it's reading high? or is your gauge reading high?

Have you switched oil weight or went to synthetic?

If the o-ring in the filter housing adapter is totally shot it will not be a slow leak.

I would check to see if there is an old o ring stuck on the
oil filter mount and make sure there is an o ring on the new filter (coat ring with engine oil before installing).

One other possibility is that the ZJ (1997 anyway) has a oil cooler built into the radiator. I might have that checked to see if there are any clogged lines etc..

Also I believe that the oil filter mount has a seal behind it that can leak.

Also check your crankcase breather, pcv etc..

The only other thing that I can think of is that some how you are getting excessive pressure into the crankcase. That would be caused my a bad piston or rings or a cracked block allowing cylinder pressure into the crankcase.

Good Luck!

It's really important to lube the flat seal on the new oil filter before screwing it on. And it's also bad to over tighten the filter.

So if you put the filter on dry, or over tightened it, that can cause the flat seal to move and blow out.

Also, are these all the same manufacture of oil filters?
