Default 4wd question

My daughter's 2006 Grand Cherokee (Lerado) is making a "bad axle bearing" type sound, she took it to a repair shop for a free diagnosis and they said the transfer case is bad, because only the front wheels were spinning when put into drive (vehicle is up on a hoist with wheels off the ground).
Can they be right, or is this normal behavior with this all wheel drive system, a friend told me if they would have applied the brakes, the torque would have split to the rear wheels, and since there was no load on the drivetrain, the front happened to be the ones driving. Please help.

I'm sorry, guy. 2006 is a little out of my expertise, but hang on and someone will be with you shortly.
