alittle confused... ive read the 42 RE was used from 93 or 94 whatever year the ZJ started... up until 2004 (which is the model i have) and instead of selling the transmission i was thinking of finding a ZJ or WJ with a bad tranny... but i got confused when i found another 42re and its said 98 and older... whats the difference in the 42re from the ZJ and WJ? anything at all?

 

The AW4 was used behind the 6-242 1993-1993.5-ish, then it was replaced with the 42RE (with AMC-patterned bellhousing.) The V8-318 got the 46RE, and the V8-287 got the 45RF.

The manual AX-15 was only used behind the 6-242 1993-1994.5, as if things aren't already confusing enough...

 

ok 93.5 to 04 they ran the 42re which was only behind the 4.0 which i figured out when i read "wikipedias" 42re deffinition or whatever.... it just didnt tell me if there was any difference in the tranny between the two gran cherokees... thanks abunch!

 

there is a difference in the bellhousing. the 4.7 v8 is obviously going to be a different bellhousing than a 5.2/5.9 because of the change in the style of block. and i know motor wise, the wj 4.0 and the zj 4.0 are not interchangable, but the wj 4.0 is interchangable with the 00+ TJ. not sure why though.

 

i know the trannys are different from the V8 and 4.0... but thats not what i was asking... the the WJ 4.0 is different then the ZJ 4.0 because they changed the heads to a distributorless engine... the motor mounts are slightly different and the water bump has a extra bolt hole...
