4.7L Grand Cherokee engine ran low on oil.
Do you need to remove engine to replace rod bearings and main bearings? Ran low on oil, turns over slowly, but won't start. We think it's a spun bearing, we want to remove the oil pan and heads but were wondering if we can keep the engine in the vehicle. Has anyone done this?

I'm pretty sure if you are doing them you gotta pull the block, but to inspect you should not have to.
You should be able to remove the pan without pulling the motor, but since yours is the 4.7l V8 I could be wrong.

Is the engine knocking when its running? Have you tried jumping it to see if it will start? If you spun a bearing your looking at way more than new bearings. You should have the crank and rods resized or more than likely it would happen again. On top of that you should get all the oil galleries cleaned of the metal shavings from the bearings, and replace the oil pump.

To the thread jacker, it is probably a broken flexplate or bolts that backed out on it. To the original poster, how low on oil did you run it? I have seen (not recommeneded) cars with whatevers in the filter, plus a half quart or so, and they survived.
