4.0 year swap compatibility?
I have a '97 GC 4X4 that sounds like it has a wrist pin ready to go. Basically what I am looking to do is find a used engine. My 1st question is basically what years of the 4.0 will work in this '97 GC? I think I read somewhere that year 2000(?) 4.0's had some changes made and possible head cracking issues(if that year would even swap over)? Just looking for ideas.
Thanks in advance.

If your dealing with a reputable salvage yard you do not need to know. They have software that catalogs and cross references their inventory. All they need is your model and year. Your looking in the $500 range for a good salvage engine of that era.

What bigbadon said is true. For future reference, they changed the motor mount and oil filter locations in 1999 so anything newer won't fit, HOWEVER the newer intake manifold flows better than the older one if that matters to you.

One other thing. In late 97 they changed to serpentine belt. The water pump spins in the opposite direction, so use whatever your old engine has, swapping the pump if need be.
