Default 242 to 231. Is it possible??

my clutch pack is going out in my 242 and i dont like the full time part time options so i would like to put a 231 t case in it. Is this possible or am i stuck with the 242? if it is possible what would be needed to convert it i.e. different driveshaft, different linkage? Any help would be greatly apperciated.

no you can swap it out. get an NP231 rebuild it on the bench, new chain seals do a slip yoke eliminator to it maybe a novack 2wd low option then swap the case in

The spline count may be different, but that is fixable. That is a pretty popular swap.

Does anybody have a link to where someone else has done this swap?

it is very easy.
all you need to worry about is the spline count, really. if both are from an H.O. model, they will both have 23 spline output.

you will need the 4wd lever/plate, and might have to swap out the speedo gear/sensor, and maybe the shift plate on the t-case where the linkage hooks up. some are clocked differently.

maybe rear drive shaft. the 231 is a bit shorter than the 242. if you can get the rear shaft with the t-case, as long as the rear axles are the same, it might help. the 8.25 has a longer pinion, so shorter shaft.

My 95 ZJ with a 4.0 came with the NP231. I don't think any of the V8 ZJs came with a NP231, only the I6 models.

i would grab one from a cherokee. a zj one may fit, but you might end up with differences with the shift lever and speedo connector.
