Default 2011 Trans Issues and engine light is on.

I have a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo AWD with 55,300+ miles and is under no warranty. I am having concerns with the transmission because it seems to shift late. As I am driving the trans shifts about a third of a city block after taking off. Also, the engine light still stays on even after it previously went off temporarily, after I re-tightened the gas cap. Engine light is still on. Please suggest on what to do.

The first thing to do is to find out exactly what the code is, that will give you a place to start with the diagnoses process.

As stated above, get the code, get it cleared, and see if it comes back. Your transmission doesn't shift depending on distance driven. It shifts depending on engine rpms and vehicle speed. There's also a TV (throttle valve) cable that affects shift points. It's important that this cable is properly adjusted. So, I'd find out what code the check engine light indicates and go from there.
