Question 2002 Laredo Customer Learn Program Mode

i have a 2002 Laredo. i have 2 programmed working transponder keys. i have followed the instructions
to enter the customer learn programming mode as to make an extra spare key , but vehicle wont enter the
programming mode. I've even varied the length of times stated in exchanging keys and nothing i try gets
the program mode started. what is the problem?

IIRC all grand cherokees after 96 have to be programmed by the dealer

I have a 2002 owner's manual and it says you can program a new key yourself, but you have to have two valid keys to start with. If self-programming doesn't work, you have to take all your keys and the vehicle to the dealer for service. The original owner was provided with a 4-digit PIN number for having a key made at the dealer without the vehicle present.

When I bought my 2000 WJ, it didn't come with a manual, but after perusing my local junk-yard, I found a 2002. Close enough.

Thanks for the reply's - may just have to live with my 2 workings keys... dealer costs don't justify going there for a 3rd key...

i have done this successfully 3 times on my 2002 grand cherokee laredo.. take the first key and turn it to the acc on position 5-7 seconds and immediately turn off and put the other key in turn to on position then wait 10-15 secs till the key with a halo around it starts blinking then put your new key in and to the on position(without starting) then just wait till you hear a chime then turn off and then start it should be good to go!

Thanks bmcherokee for reply, have tried your suggested time frame on keys , still no luck with entering programming mode.. must be something wrong in main control which means I'd have to go to dealer.... Not prepared to pay their fee... may just go to Walmart and pay them $60 for a spare....
