My interior light come on when I open door, but stay on while driving and as long as engine runs. But they do go off when turned off after a few minutes as the should. Why are they on always when running ?

Welcome to CF!
On the headlight multifunction switch, there is a ring that controls the brightness of the dash lights. If the ring is all the way up, the interior lights stay on all the time. All the way down, they don't come on it all. The next to last click upward turns the odometer, radio, and VIC lights to bright so you can see them when your headlights are on during the day. The reason they go off after you park it is there is a safety feature built into the Body Control Module to turn them off on a "timed" cycle. As soon as you open the door, the BCM wakes up. If this ring switch doesn't correct the problem, you've got a door latch switch malfunction, although that usually gives you a "door open" message on the VIC.

I'm having a similar issue with my '02, but my issue is that the lights don't go off after a delay when you hit 'Lock' on the remote (I have the delay set to 60 seconds). The Jeep never gives me an EVIC message, and recognizes when the doors are opened or closed... i.e. it won't give me a 'PERFORM SERVICE' message and beep at me until AFTER I close the door, so that's not my issue. I wonder if the lighting control stalk has an issue...

If the multifunction switch actually changes the lighting configurations, as in dimming the dash, turning on or off the courtesy lights and brightening the odo display, then it's not the switch, but the BCM that's at fault. A new switch is around $70.
