2002 Cherokee will not shift

2002 Cherokee will not shift
I have a 2002 laredo with a 4.0
It will not shift out of gear.
Wife said that it started to shift hard intermittently a few days back.
I have did a little research but no real answer.
Do not want to take it to mechanics for something simple like a sensor etc
any ideas ?

Do you mean the shifter itself is hard to move, or is it a problem with the way it's driving?
My 2000 WJ recently stopped downshifting to first when stopping. It would also occasionally jump quickly between gears while maintaining about 45 on a level road. I changed the transmission pressure modulator and pressure control solenoid and it seems to be better now.
